A town for visitors |
| Södertälje is a town for visitors. The town got its name after the natural cut - ett Tälje - in the landscape. The first inhabitants here came here more than a thousand years ago and saw opportunities to live a good life where Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea met.The first tourist who came to Södertälje was Ansgar, the Nordic apostle, who travelled through the town on his way to the viking island of Birka in the 8th century. Bishop Adam of Bremen travelled the same way in the year of 1070. When Norrtälje later was constructed in Roslagen in the year of 1622, Tälje became Södertälje to represent the south cut, while Norrtälje represented the north. In the year of 1719, Södertälje was burnt to the ground - along with the entire east coast from Gävle to Norrköping - by the Russian fleet. Later in the history of Södertälje Carl Michael Bellman often came to Södertälje to visit the mansions in the area.During the 19th century the canal of Södertälje was dug and the railway was built. The famous pretzel ladies came to sell their goods by the sluice and by the railway stations, not to mention among the visitors of Södertälje who came there to drink the clear water and swim in the lakes. Södertälje was a popular swimming resort back in the days, and that tradition is administrated even today. Södertälje is still a city which people visit to enjoy the beautiful swimming resorts, the nature, the commerce, the sports, and the culture - as pleasant and worthy to explore as it was in the past. |
